The Gujarat Minority Coordination Committee (MCC) has sent a legal notice to top state officials, strongly objecting to the alleged police action that recently took place in Vadodara. The organization has accused the police of torturing Muslim men in custody on August 26–27 during Ganesh Visarjan in the Panigate area and parading them in a humiliating manner in public.
According to media reports, videos and photographs that surfaced on social media on August 27 showed several accused men being marched through the streets in the presence of police personnel. While police described the act as part of a “reconstruction” process, human rights groups and community leaders denounced it as a violation of prisoners’ rights and a form of public humiliation.
MCC convener Mujahid Nafees, in the notice, stated that such conduct by the police is a violation of Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to life and personal liberty. He further said the action disregards the Supreme Court’s guidelines laid down in D.K. Basu vs State of West Bengal (1997), which were meant to prevent custodial torture and misuse of police powers.
The notice has demanded departmental and legal action against the concerned police officials, registration of FIRs against those responsible, compensation and legal aid for the victims, and effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The MCC said that despite wide media coverage and public outrage over the incident, no departmental inquiry has been initiated so far, nor has any official faced action. This, the group stated, is why it has now issued a legal notice to hold senior authorities directly accountable.
Human rights groups and local community leaders have also called for a fair and transparent investigation into the matter. The incident has raised serious questions about policing practices in the state and the safety of minorities.
