Alleged caste-based attacks on Dalit youths in two different villages of Amroha district have sparked outrage in the local community. The incidents have also raised serious questions over the police’s slow response and the failure to take strict action against the accused.
On September 8, 26-year-old Dalit youth Kaushendra, a salesman from Bhanwali village, was beaten by three upper-caste youths while being subjected to casteist slurs. At the time of the attack, Kaushendra confronted the assailants, who were present along with officials from the electricity department. The attackers reportedly called him derogatory names like “Chamar” and seriously injured him. Kaushendra has filed a complaint at Rehra Police Station, demanding strict action under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Locals allege that the police have yet to take any concrete action, and the accused remain at large.
Earlier, on August 17, in Musallepur village, Dalit youth Shivam Singh was attacked by four upper-caste youths after refusing to drink alcohol. It is alleged that the attackers cut Shivam’s veins with a sharp weapon, rendering one of his hands non-functional. Shivam remained hospitalized for 15 days. His father, Baburam, filed a complaint at Bachhraun Police Station, but the family claims that the police have taken no action and are pressuring them to withdraw the case.
Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad strongly condemned both incidents, warning that if immediate action is not taken against the accused, the organization would launch large-scale protests against the state government. Local Dalit rights groups have termed the attacks as clear caste-based oppression and demanded strict administrative action.
Amroha police have confirmed that complaints have been filed and investigations under the SC/ST Act are underway. They assured that the absconding accused will be arrested soon.
These incidents have raised serious concerns over the increasing caste-based attacks on Dalits in Uttar Pradesh and the police’s inaction. Local communities and rights organizations are demanding swift and strict action from the state government to ensure justice for Dalits and reinforce the spirit of equality in society.
