“Votes Are Being Stolen Through Voter Lists, Not EVMs: Abhishek Banerjee After Meeting the Election Commission”

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission, alleging large-scale manipulation of the electoral rolls. The party claims that India’s democratic process is being undermined not through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), but through systematic “engineering” of voter lists. TMC has warned that if irregularities are found in the final electoral roll issued after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), it will challenge the exercise in court.

A 10-member TMC delegation, led by the party’s National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, met the full Election Commission, including the Chief Election Commissioner, in New Delhi on Wednesday. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Banerjee said,
“The truth is absolutely clear—votes are not being stolen through EVMs, but through manipulation of the voter list.”

TMC raised serious concerns over the identification of 13.6 million voters in West Bengal’s draft electoral roll on the grounds of “logical discrepancies.” The party said that branding such a massive number of voters as suspicious is deeply alarming and amounts to a direct assault on the foundations of democracy. TMC has demanded a transparent and detailed hearing from the Election Commission on the issue.

Banerjee alleged that the Election Commission failed to provide clear or satisfactory answers to most of the questions raised by the delegation.
“Except for two or three basic questions, most of our queries went unanswered. Questions related to the SIR were repeatedly diverted towards citizenship issues, while concerns over deletion of voters’ names were addressed only with procedural explanations such as filling Form-7,” he said.

The TMC leader also questioned the conduct of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that his demeanor during the meeting was aggressive.
“When we began presenting our points, he started losing his temper. I told him—you are nominated, I am elected. If he has the courage, he should make the meeting footage public and respond to each of my allegations before the media,” Banerjee said.

Calling the entire episode a “well-orchestrated political conspiracy,” Banerjee also took an indirect swipe at the central government.
“Who is the Union Cooperation Minister? Amit Shah. And who was his secretary? Gyanesh Kumar. The same Gyanesh Kumar is now the Chief Election Commissioner. Is this merely a coincidence, or a carefully designed plan?” he asked.

TMC asserted that it would not allow voters in West Bengal to be humiliated or deprived of their voting rights under any circumstances. The party said that if names are removed from the electoral rolls in the name of administrative procedures, it will oppose such actions at every level.

The delegation included TMC’s Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien, MPs Saket Gokhale, Ritabrata Banerjee and Mamata Thakur, along with West Bengal ministers Manas Bhuiyan, Pradip Majumdar and Chandrima Bhattacharya.

So far, the Election Commission has not issued any detailed public response to the allegations.
