FIR Under SC/ST Act Against 9-Year-Old in Rohtas; Juvenile Justice Board Seeks Explanation

A case has come to light in the Nauhatta police station area of Rohtas district, where a nine-year-old child has been named in a First Information Report (FIR) registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The matter has sparked discussion at the local level following its disclosure.

According to police sources, the incident stemmed from a dispute and scuffle among children in the Nauhatta area. On December 7, 2025, an application was submitted to the police station by a guardian in connection with the incident. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered naming four children along with others. The allegations reportedly pertain to assault and verbal abuse.

The case drew attention when it emerged that one of the named accused is approximately nine years old, and provisions of the SC/ST Act were also invoked against the child.

On Thursday, February 19, a minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. Magistrate Amit Kumar Pandey and Board Member Tej Bali Singh assessed the child’s age to be between nine and ten years and expressed surprise over the contents of the FIR.

It is reported that several columns in the FIR were left blank. The ages of none of the accused—whether minors or adults—were mentioned. The Board directed that the child be released into the custody of the guardian and sought an explanation from the Station House Officer of Nauhatta within 24 hours. The Board stated that if the response is found unsatisfactory, higher authorities would be informed.

Nauhatta Station House Officer Divakar Kumar said that the FIR was registered on the basis of the written complaint received at the police station. According to him, the application alleged assault and verbal abuse.

“The registration of an FIR upon receiving a complaint from the aggrieved party is a primary responsibility. Further action will be taken based on the facts that emerge during the investigation,” the SHO said.

The matter is currently under investigation. Following the directions of the Juvenile Justice Board, further administrative action is being closely watched.
