A statement by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday has set off a political storm in the national capital. Speaking at the All India Brahmin Conference held in Pitampura, Gupta said, “If anyone is lighting the flame of knowledge in our society, it is the Brahmin community,” adding that every government “must work for the welfare of Brahmins.”
In her address, Gupta further remarked, “Brahmins not only worship the scriptures but also respect arms and weapons. Both knowledge and power are essential for protecting society and the nation.”
The Chief Minister also criticized Delhi’s development record, saying that progress had been “slow for the last 27 years,” and it was now time for everyone “to come together and take Delhi forward as a developed city.”
Her comments sparked anger among opposition parties and social organizations.
AAP leader Sanjay Jha called the statement “insensitive to public sentiment” and “an insult to Dalits and backward classes.” He said, “To give one community a special status like this is not only insensitive but also goes against the spirit of social equality.”
While the BJP has not issued any official response, party sources said the Chief Minister’s remarks should be viewed “in a cultural context.”
Dr. Rehna Ravindran, an anti-caste activist, criticized Gupta’s comments, saying, “Rekha Gupta is echoing the mindset of the BJP-RSS establishment — this statement promotes caste superiority.”
Writer and academic Dr. Laxman Yadav called it “a sign of the return of Manusmriti-driven ideology,” warning that Dalit, OBC, and Adivasi communities must remain vigilant.
Following Gupta’s remarks, hashtags like #RekhaGuptaCasteRemark and #BrahminPrivilege began trending rapidly on social media.
Within 48 hours, over 50,000 posts had been made using these tags. While many users accused her of “trying to consolidate a vote bank,” others defended her, saying that “protecting Brahmin culture is a matter of pride.”
This is not the first time Rekha Gupta has found herself in controversy over her remarks.
After becoming Chief Minister, her old social media posts resurfaced — many containing objectionable comments about the Muslim community and political rivals. At that time, she dismissed them as “old and taken out of context.”
Political analysts believe Gupta’s latest comments are not just cultural but part of a calculated political strategy.
With the upcoming Delhi Municipal and local body elections, the BJP is likely attempting to strengthen its base among upper-caste voters. However, experts caution that such statements could deepen social polarization and revive caste-based discourse in the capital.
Gupta’s “flame of knowledge” remark has now become the latest flashpoint in Delhi’s political discourse.
While BJP supporters defend it as “respecting culture and tradition,” opposition leaders and social activists have slammed it as “casteist and divisive politics.”
All eyes are now on the Chief Minister’s next move — will she offer an explanation, or attempt to turn the controversy into electoral advantage?
