Prayagraj’s Sangamnagari witnessed a shocking incident when a 20-year-old UPSC aspirant seriously injured himself in an attempt to become a girl.
According to reports, the student had been researching gender transition procedures through online videos and consulted a local doctor for guidance. On Tuesday, he injected himself with anesthesia and attempted to partially cut his genitals with a surgical blade. As the effect of the anesthesia wore off, he experienced excruciating pain and heavy bleeding.
With the help of his landlord, the student was rushed to Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital, and due to the severity of his condition, he was later referred to SRN Hospital. Senior surgeon Dr. Santosh Singh stated that the student’s condition is currently stable. He added, “The patient told us that he had wanted to become a girl since the age of 14 and this inner conflict had affected his studies. We have informed his family about options including gender reassignment surgery.”
Experts have described the incident as a serious warning about mental health and gender identity issues. SRN Hospital’s psychiatry team will conduct a mental health assessment and provide appropriate counseling to the student.
Originally from Amethi, the student’s father is a farmer and his mother is a homemaker. He was living in a rented room in the Civil Lines area of Prayagraj while preparing for the UPSC examination.
This incident highlights the urgent need for greater awareness about mental health and gender identity in society. Experts stress that families, communities, and educational institutions must provide guidance and support to prevent individuals from taking such extreme steps.
