Security agencies in Assam and Tripura have carried out a major operation amid fears of a terror conspiracy, arresting 11 individuals for their alleged links to Bangladesh-based banned jihadist organisations—Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and its affiliate, Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). The action was launched on the basis of specific and credible intelligence inputs.
Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) conducted simultaneous late-night raids across four districts, detaining 10 suspects, while another accused was arrested from Tripura. According to police officials, all the arrests are believed to be connected to a single network.
Police claim that preliminary investigations have revealed the arrested suspects’ alleged contacts with AQIS and ABT modules. The network is suspected to have been working to radicalise youth in the Northeast, set up clandestine cells, and foment instability in sensitive areas.
Cases have been registered against the accused under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). During the raids, security forces seized mobile phones, SIM cards, digital data, incriminating documents, and other materials, which have been sent for forensic examination.
Investigating agencies are also probing how the alleged network was linked to Bangladesh and other countries, its sources of funding, and whether communication was being carried out through social media and encrypted messaging applications. Police are further examining whether the module had operational branches in other northeastern states.
Police and intelligence agencies have reiterated that there will be zero tolerance in matters concerning national security. Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid rumours, and promptly report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
Security experts said the operation is part of a broader crackdown on jihadist networks operating in the Northeast. Further investigations are underway, and more arrests or significant disclosures are likely in the coming days.
