A three-day national workshop on “Capacity Building for Working Urdu Journalists” commenced on Tuesday at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad. The workshop is being jointly organized by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), Ministry of Education, Government of India, and MANUU’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ).
Presiding over the inaugural session, MANUU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan emphasized the need to prepare Urdu journalists for emerging challenges in the fast-changing media landscape. He urged journalists and students to strengthen their linguistic skills to ensure effective communication of news.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Sarfaraz Saifi, CEO & Editor-in-Chief of Bharat News Network, highlighted the opportunities and challenges in Urdu journalism, particularly in the broadcast sector.
NCPUL Director Dr. Mohammad Shams Iqbal, in his welcome address, stated that the ministry is committed to promoting Urdu media and prioritizing the training of Urdu journalists. He noted that collaborating with a nationally recognized institution like MANUU is a matter of pride.
Several leading voices from Urdu journalism also shared their perspectives at the event. Veteran journalist M.A. Majid (Hyderabad) reflected on contemporary challenges. NCPUL member Mohammad Abdul Sattar spoke on government initiatives to strengthen Urdu media. Dr. Yameen Ansari, Resident Editor of Inquilab (Delhi), underlined the editorial responsibilities of Urdu newspapers. Aamer Ali Khan, News Editor of Siasat Urdu Daily (Hyderabad), discussed the impact of Urdu journalism on society and public life.
Introducing the workshop, Prof. Mohammad Fariyad, Dean and Head of MCJ, briefed the participants on the program’s aims to enhance the professional and linguistic competence of Urdu journalists. The vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Ehtesham Ahmad Khan.
On the occasion, the university magazine “Al-Qalam” was also released. Its editor and MANUU PRO, Dr. Mohammad Mustafa Ali Sarwari, highlighted its academic and journalistic significance.
