Mob Beats Supaul Laborer in Madhubani for Hours, Calls Him Bangladeshi for Refusing to Say ‘Jai Shri Ram’

A mob attempted to lynch laborer Noorshid Alam from Shankarpur village in Birpur police station area of Supaul district in the Nandi Chakra village of Rajnagar police station, Madhubani district. Alam had gone there for work when the incident occurred.

Alam told reporters, “I had gone to a shop to buy some items when a young man approached me and demanded that I chant ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Jai Shri Ram.’ I told him I could say ‘Jai Bharat’ but not ‘Jai Shri Ram.’ About an hour later, the same man returned, threatening me and forcing me to say it. I reluctantly complied.”

He further said, “The next day, I went to work and stepped out for lunch. On my way back, 2–3 people stopped me near the shop, calling me a Bangladeshi. They dragged me for three kilometers and beat me severely. Blood was flowing from my nose and mouth, but no one came to help. The mob threatened to kill me by burying me alive at a ‘Kali Mandir.’ Around 50 people had gathered there and continued attacking me with kicks and punches for a long time.”

Villagers from Alam’s hometown filed a complaint at the local police station. The station officer said, “The victim has sustained injuries, and an investigation is underway. We are also questioning the shopkeeper.” Initially hesitant to file a case, Alam registered an FIR following police advice.

Following the attack, other laborers from the village, fearing for their safety, stopped working and returned home, creating an atmosphere of fear in the area.

Experts say such incidents generate social tension and put the safety of laborers at serious risk.
