On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu announced a major reshuffle of governors across nine states and Union Territories. Among the appointments, Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain has been named the new Governor of Bihar. He will succeed the incumbent Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and is expected to take the oath and assume office at Raj Bhavan soon.
A distinguished officer of the Indian Army, Hasnain was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy in 1974 and served for over four decades. Renowned for his military expertise in Kashmir, he commanded the 15 Corps (Chinar Corps) in Srinagar and the 21 Corps. His service earned him some of the highest military honors, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and Sena Medal (SM).
Hasnain’s academic credentials are equally impressive. He studied at Sherwood College in Nainital, completed higher education at Delhi University, and undertook advanced studies at the Royal College of Defence Studies in London and the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Hawaii.
After retiring from the Army, Hasnain remained engaged in education and strategic affairs. In 2018, he was appointed Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir. He has also been a prominent commentator on national security and geopolitical issues.
Experts view this appointment as a move that combines constitutional propriety with experience and leadership, enhancing the role of the Raj Bhavan in Bihar’s political landscape. The Governor plays a key role in calling legislative sessions, government formation, and fulfilling constitutional responsibilities.
Alongside Bihar, new governors have also been appointed in eight other states and Union Territories, including West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Nagaland.
