India’s left-wing parties CPI(M), CPI, and CPI(ML)-Liberation have strongly opposed the potential participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the “Board of Peace for Gaza,” proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The parties argue that the board could undermine the United Nations’ role and turn Gaza’s reconstruction into a profit-driven exercise.
CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby stated, “This board seeks to convert the destruction of Palestinian land into commercial gain rather than focus on rebuilding Gaza. The peace plan contains no clear provision to end Israel’s occupation.” He added on Twitter that India should uphold its anti-colonial tradition and take a stand in support of the Palestinian people.
CPI Rajya Sabha MP P. Santosh Kumar said, “Trump has no authority to act as the world’s policeman. India should not yield to pressure from any powerful country. The Modi government must support a just and rules-based international order, in line with Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy.”
CPI(ML)-Liberation criticized the proposed board as an attempt to replace the UN and centralize authority in the U.S. The party accused the Modi government of potentially abandoning India’s historic anti-colonial foreign policy and solidarity with the Global South, siding instead with the U.S. and Israel. CPI(ML)-Liberation described such a move as a “shameful betrayal.”
The party also warned that despite the October 2025 ceasefire, civilian casualties, infrastructure destruction, and famine-like conditions continue in Gaza. They argued that India’s participation in the board would signal a failure to support the Palestinian struggle.
Trump has reportedly invited around 60 countries, including India, to join the board, which is described as a platform to guide peacebuilding, governance, and reconstruction in Gaza. India has not yet taken an official decision, reportedly weighing diplomatic sensitivities and international legality.
Left parties have appealed to the government to maintain India’s peace-oriented and non-colonial foreign policy, and to adopt a clear stance in support of the rights and self-determination of the Palestinian people.
