Elderly Vegetable Vendor Beaten to Death Over ₹5 Dispute in Jehanabad

Insaaf Times Desk

In a shocking incident in Kako Bazaar, Jehanabad district, a minor dispute over ₹5 led to the brutal death of an elderly vegetable vendor on Tuesday evening. The victim has been identified as 60-year-old Mohammad Mohsin, who had been selling vegetables in the same market for the past four decades to support his family.

Eyewitnesses reported that municipal employees collecting market fees demanded ₹20 from Mohsin. Due to low sales, Mohsin requested to pay only ₹15 at that moment and promised to settle the remaining ₹5 later. Following this minor argument, the fee collector, identified as Vicky Patel, attacked Mohsin with an iron weight. Mohsin sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.

The incident caused panic in the market. Mohsin’s body remained on the ground for several hours, prompting locals to take to the streets in anger. Infuriated villagers blocked the Jehanabad–Nalanda main road, while shopkeepers closed their establishments in protest.

The victim’s family alleged that contractors associated with the municipal council had long been pressuring vendors to pay higher fees. Mohsin was a father of eight and earned a modest daily income to support his family.

Kako police have registered a murder case against Vicky Patel and launched a search for him. Officials stated that, given the gravity of the incident, a special investigation team has been formed, and the accused will be arrested soon.

The incident has also sparked political outrage. Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi described it as “Bihar’s real jungle raj” and criticized the government. The political controversy intensified after photos of the accused with certain ruling party leaders went viral on social media.

This murder over just ₹5 not only exposes administrative negligence but also raises serious questions about the market fee collection system and the safety of the economically vulnerable. Meanwhile, Mohsin’s family is demanding justice, and the area remains tense.
