Sensational Honour Killing in Nalanda: Family, Angry Over Love Affair, Kills 19-Year-Old Daughter and Buries Body in Pit

A shocking case of honour killing has come to light in Bihar’s Nalanda district. In Nonia Vigaha village under Noorsarai police station, family members allegedly murdered a 19-year-old girl over a love affair and buried her body in a three-foot-deep pit by the riverside. The incident surfaced when a foul odour began emanating from the spot and stray dogs were seen dragging a sack.

On Saturday morning, villagers noticed a suspicious stench near the river. Upon reaching the site, they saw dogs pulling at a sack. Police, along with a magistrate, arrived at the scene and recovered the body after digging up the pit. The deceased was identified as 19-year-old Mayawati Kumari.

According to locals, the girl was in a relationship with a young man from the same village. She had eloped twice, and reports also suggest that she had become pregnant. The family, angered and fearing social disgrace, allegedly conspired to kill her, sealed the body in a sack, and buried it in the pit.

During police interrogation, the victim’s younger brother revealed the entire matter. Following the incident, the family fled the village. Police recovered an injection, rope, and other suspicious items from the spot. It is suspected that the girl was killed by administering a poisonous injection.

Nalanda Sadar DSP Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal said the body had been buried 3–4 days ago, and the exact cause of death would be confirmed only after the post-mortem report. Forensic experts and a dog squad have been roped in for the investigation. Police are searching for the absconding family members.

The incident once again highlights the rising trend of honour killings and the restrictions imposed on women’s freedom in society. The pressing question remains: how long will daughters continue to be sacrificed in the name of ‘honour’?
