Former IAS Officer Kannan Gopinathan Joins Congress, Pledges Commitment to Democratic Values

Former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Kannan Gopinathan formally joined the Indian National Congress (INC) today. The event was held at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi, where Congress General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal welcomed him into the party.

Since resigning from the civil service, Gopinathan has been actively involved in defending democratic values and citizens’ rights. He had resigned in 2019 in protest against the restrictions imposed in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370.

After joining Congress, Gopinathan said, “Citizen participation and government accountability are crucial in a democracy. I will strive to ensure the protection of fundamental rights and strengthen democratic institutions.”

Welcoming him, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal said, “We are glad to have Kannan Gopinathan in our party. His experience and commitment will further strengthen the democratic values of Congress. We hope he will bring new energy to the party’s vision and work.”

Analysts note that Gopinathan’s move could be significant for Congress both politically and socially. The entry of a former senior officer into active politics could enhance the party’s image and strengthen public trust.
