The Bihar government has appointed former Director General of Police (DGP) and senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1989 batch, Alok Raj, as the Chairman of the Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC). According to a notification issued by the General Administration Department, the appointment will take effect from January 1, 2026.
Alok Raj’s tenure will be for five years or until he attains the age of 65, whichever comes earlier. The appointment has been made under Section 3 of the Bihar State Staff Selection Commission Act, 2002. He will assume charge of the Commission after his retirement.
At present, Alok Raj was serving as Director General-cum-Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Bihar Police Building Construction Corporation. December 31, 2025, was his last working day in the post, following which he retired from service.
The Bihar Staff Selection Commission conducts examinations for recruitment to non-gazetted posts across various state government departments. The appointment is being seen as significant at a time when the state government has set an ambitious target of large-scale job creation and recruitment. The Commission is expected to play a crucial role in the proposed recruitment processes in the coming years.
Alok Raj has earlier served as the Director General of Police of Bihar for a period of 105 days, preceding the incumbent DGP, Vinay Kumar. Apart from Bihar, he has also held several key positions in Jharkhand and West Bengal.
His first posting was as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Patna City. He was awarded the Police Gallantry Medal for his bravery in a police encounter in which four criminals were killed. During his service, he received three Presidential Medals, including the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (1994), the Medal for Meritorious Service (2008), and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2016).
In addition, Alok Raj served in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) from 2004 to 2011. In 2019, he was conferred the Atal Ratna Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to police service. After his retirement, he has now been entrusted with the responsibility of heading one of the state’s key recruitment bodies.
