Family Attack Over Love in Dharwad: Pregnant Daughter Killed, Shock Waves Across Village

In a shocking incident from Inam Veerapur village in Karnataka’s Dharwad district, 20-year-old Manya Patil, seven months pregnant, was allegedly beaten to death by her own father and other relatives. Reports suggest the motive behind the killing was Manya’s marriage to a Dalit man. The incident has sparked outrage in the area, with locals demanding justice.

According to police, Manya had married Vivekanand Doddamani in May this year. Manya belonged to the Lingayat community, while Vivekanand is from the Dalit community. Following their marriage, the couple had moved to Hubballi for safety, as Manya’s family had strongly opposed the union.

On Sunday evening, Manya was working in the fields when her father, Prakashgouda Patil, and other relatives allegedly attacked her. Reports indicate they beat her with iron rods and other hard objects, leaving her gravely injured. When members of her husband’s family tried to intervene, they also sustained injuries.

Police Action and Arrests
The critically injured Manya was admitted to a private hospital in Hubballi, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Police have arrested her father, Prakashgouda Patil, along with two other relatives. During preliminary questioning, the accused admitted to targeting Manya and her husband’s family. The search for other suspects is ongoing.

Following the incident, Dalit organizations and local social activists staged protests demanding an end to “honor killings” and strict punishment for the perpetrators.

This tragic case highlights the persistent struggle in India against casteism, familial pressure, and social discrimination, where people are forced to pay a deadly price for exercising their right to love and marry freely.
