Delhi University (DU) has taken a significant decision to remove the controversial text Manusmriti from the third semester of its postgraduate (MA) Sanskrit course and replace it with the ancient treatise Shukraniti. The decision was made by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yogesh Singh, using his emergency powers. The change will be presented for final approval at the university’s Executive Council (EC) meeting scheduled for September 12.
Manusmriti has long been considered contentious in social and academic circles due to its prescriptions regarding caste hierarchy and gender discrimination. Experts and social groups argue that including it in the curriculum contradicts the principles of justice and equality upheld in modern society. Previous attempts to incorporate the text in subjects such as law and history also faced strong opposition.
Going forward, students will study Shukraniti, authored by sage Shukracharya, instead of Manusmriti. The revised curriculum will cover topics such as ancient Indian governance, ethics, national security, military strategy, and social norms, aiming to familiarize students with the principles of ethical administration and governance.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh emphasized that any future attempts to reintroduce Manusmriti into the syllabus will be met with immediate administrative action. He stated, “Our position is clear: this text will not be taught at the university.”
