A Dalit youth was allegedly assaulted by police personnel inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district after he approached authorities with a complaint regarding unpaid wages of workers. The incident took place in the Kokhraj police station area, and the victim has alleged that the assault happened under pressure from a local brick kiln owner. The FIR was registered only after court intervention on Tuesday.

The victim, Gyan Singh, a resident of Mohammadpur Asawa, worked as a supervisor at a brick kiln reportedly owned by Mohammad Sakir of Baghelpur. According to Singh, earlier this year he brought 90 labourers from Chhattisgarh on Sakir’s instructions. The workers continued their work until the monsoon season, but when they demanded their wages, the kiln owner allegedly refused payment and drove them away after insulting them.

Following repeated requests from the labourers, Singh approached the police to seek settlement of unpaid wages. He alleges that SHO Chandra Bhushan Maurya called him to the police station on September 27, 2025. When he arrived, the kiln owner was already present. Singh claims that a sub-inspector—also reportedly named Maurya—assaulted him inside the station under the kiln owner’s influence.

Singh further alleges that he was forced to sign a stamp paper declaring he would pay ₹5 lakh to the labourers. After the incident, he returned home with difficulty, only to face further harassment. He claims that the kiln owner came to his house the same night, verbally abused him, and issued death threats. Fearing for their safety, Singh and his family have since moved to a relative’s house.

With no action from the local police, Singh approached the court. Following its directive, Kokhraj police registered a case under SC/ST Act and other relevant sections.

Circle Officer Sirathu, Satyendra Tiwari, confirmed that an FIR has been filed and an investigation is underway. He stated that further legal action will be taken based on evidence.

The victim’s family has demanded police protection and immediate action against the brick kiln owner and the accused police personnel. The incident has raised concerns among local labour groups, social organizations, and human rights activists.
