A small village in Jalna district, Maharashtra, erupted in communal tension on September 19 following the alleged desecration of a 12th-century Mahadev temple. According to police, pieces of meat were thrown inside the temple, triggering outrage among villagers.
Police investigations revealed that 38-year-old Nandkishor Suresh Wadgaonkar, a resident of Anwa village in Bhokrdan tehsil, was responsible for the act. CCTV footage confirmed his involvement. Police officer Santosh Mane stated that Wadgaonkar was angry over being denied permission to build a house near the temple and that personal disputes prompted his actions.
Following the incident, right-wing organizations staged protests and organized a “Hindu Jan Aakrosh Morcha.” Thousands gathered at Chhatrapati Shivaji Chowk in Bhokrdan. Speakers at the rally included Ratnagiri Maharaj, activist Sangram Bhandare, MLA Sangram Jagtap (RCP–Ajit Pawar faction), and Ambadas Ambhore. Several of the speeches reportedly contained provocative and hate-filled remarks against the Muslim community, further escalating tensions.
In the aftermath, several Muslim families from the village left their homes. Students residing in minority college hostels also began vacating their accommodations and returning home.
Muslim community leaders met with Additional SP Ayush Nopani, demanding action against the rally speakers. Former MP Imtiaz Jaleel condemned the incendiary speeches and urged the police to take impartial and effective action.
Local residents and social leaders believe the incident could be part of a larger attempt to provoke communal sentiments in the region.
