In a dramatic turn of events in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district, Vishal Soni, son of BJP leader Mahesh Soni, staged his own death to escape debts amounting to ₹1.40 crore. Police investigations eventually exposed the elaborate ruse.
On September 5, authorities received information that a car had plunged into the Kali Sindh river. When divers pulled the vehicle out, it was identified as belonging to Vishal Soni. However, the car was found empty, raising police suspicions and prompting a large-scale search operation.
Mahesh Soni, Vishal’s father, accused the administration of negligence, and for two weeks three separate police teams scoured a 20-kilometer stretch of the river. When eight days passed without any sign of Vishal, investigators turned to his mobile call records, which revealed he was in Maharashtra.
Police tracked him down and arrested him in the Faradapur police station area of Sambhaji Nagar district. During interrogation, Vishal admitted he owned six trucks and two passenger vehicles but was drowning in debts exceeding ₹1.40 crore. He confessed, “I was told that if I managed to get a death certificate, the bank loans would be waived.”
Investigations further revealed that at 5 a.m. on September 5, Vishal had collected money from one of his truck drivers near Gopalpura, pushed his car into the river after turning off its headlights, and fled on his driver’s motorcycle to Indore. From there, he traveled to Shirdi and Shani Shingnapur, all while reading newspaper reports of his own “death.”
When he realized police were closing in, Vishal tore his clothes, rolled in dust, and tried to register a false kidnapping case at Faradapur police station in a last-ditch attempt to mislead authorities.
Police stated that there is no direct legal provision to punish someone for faking their own death, so Vishal was handed back to his family without formal charges.
The case highlights not only the crushing financial pressures that drove Vishal to such extremes, but also how individuals sometimes resort to deception to evade accountability. It was the persistence and swift action of the police that ultimately uncovered the conspiracy and brought the truth to light.
