While Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s tenth term is being hailed as historic, the composition of his newly-formed cabinet has ignited a fresh debate in Bihar over dynastic politics versus political balance.
The NDA government, led by Nitish Kumar, has announced a 27-member cabinet, including 12 first-time ministers. However, the opposition claims that half of these “new faces” hail from politically influential families.
NDA leaders have dismissed these allegations, arguing that the cabinet reflects political strength, social representation, and mass support. The RJD–Congress combine, on the other hand, says the slogan of a “dynasty-free Bihar” now appears limited to political rhetoric.
First-time Ministers: Brief Profiles
1.Sanjay Tiger (Bhojpur–Ara, BJP) – With a Sangh background and a first-term MLA, Tiger is a sharp speaker with a law degree. Defeated CPI(ML) candidate to secure a cabinet berth.
2.Shreyasi Singh (Jamui, BJP) – International shooter and Commonwealth gold medalist; daughter of former Union Minister Digvijay Singh. Second-term MLA and first-time minister.
3.Rama Nishad (Aurai, BJP) – Daughter-in-law of former Union Minister Captain Jai Narayan Nishad and wife of former MP Ajay Nishad. Former municipal council president; first-term MLA and minister.
4.Lakhendra Kumar Roshan (Patepur, BJP) – Dalit leader, known for his aggressive style; two-time MLA. Gained attention for a mic-breaking incident in the Assembly. First-time minister.
5.Arun Shankar Prasad (Khajouli, BJP) – Influential Vaishya leader from Mithilanchal; three-time MLA. Played key organizational roles before becoming a minister for the first time.
6.Pramod Chandravanshi (MLC, BJP) – From the extremely backward class. Formerly with JD(U), joined BJP in 2023. First-time minister after becoming MLC; a key OBC representative.
7.Sanjay Singh (Mahua, LJP–R) – First-time MLA, gained attention by defeating Tej Pratap Yadav by a large margin. Contested in 2020 as well; first-time minister.
8.Deepak Prakash (RLM) – Son of Upendra Kushwaha, with an engineering background. First-time minister; likely to become MLC soon. Represents emerging youth leadership from the Kushwaha community.
RJD–Congress have targeted several cabinet members as examples of dynastic politics:
Santosh Suman Manjhi (HAM) – Son of former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi
Samrat Chaudhary (BJP) – Son of former minister Shakuni Chaudhary
Deepak Prakash (RLM) – Son of former Union Minister Upendra Kushwaha
Shreyasi Singh (BJP) – Daughter of former Union Minister Digvijay Singh; mother Putul Devi was also MP
Rama Nishad (BJP) – Daughter-in-law of Captain Jai Narayan Nishad; wife of former MP Ajay Nishad
Vijay Kumar Chaudhary (JDU) – Son of former MLA Jagdish Prasad Chaudhary
Ashok Chaudhary (JDU) – Son of former minister Mahavir Chaudhary
Nitin Naveen (BJP) – Son of former minister Naveen Kishore Sinha
Sunil Kumar (JDU) – Son of former minister Chandrika Ram; brother of ex-MLA Anil Kumar
Lasy Singh (JDU) – Wife of the late Samata Party district chief Bhutan Singh
The opposition claims this “confirms that half of the new cabinet is dynastic”! The NDA maintains that leaders from political families were included based on performance and mass support, not just lineage. Both JD(U) and BJP emphasize that cabinet formation was guided by caste arithmetic, organizational needs, and social representation—not dynastic considerations.
As debates over “dynastic politics versus public support” intensify, Bihar’s political discourse is set to witness sharper discussions across legislative and political platforms in the coming days.
