Barabanki: Bhim Army Worker Commits Suicide Alleging Police Harassment, Blames Officers in Suicide Note

A shocking incident has come to light in Mau Thari village under the Jaidpur police station in Barabanki district, Uttar Pradesh. Ashok Kumar (45), a local office-bearer of the Bhim Army, allegedly took his own life due to continuous police harassment and extortion attempts. His body was found hanging from a tree outside the village on the morning of October 1, 2025.

Ashok Kumar, who served as the Tehsil Nyay Panchayat President in the Bhim Army, supported his family through hard labor. According to family members and local sources, he was threatened with a false case by Jaidpur police station officials, including Inspector Santosh and Daroga Nirmal Singh. It is alleged that these officers demanded a bribe of ₹75,000 from him and threatened to implicate him under stringent laws such as the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act if the money was not paid.

Financially weak, Ashok Kumar was unable to pay the demanded amount. He even tried to sell his land to arrange the funds, but could not find an immediate buyer. Constant harassment and severe mental stress reportedly led him to hang himself on the night of October 1.

Before his death, Ashok Kumar wrote a suicide note and sent messages to several people on WhatsApp, holding Inspector Santosh, Daroga Nirmal Singh, and others responsible for his death. In the note, he explicitly stated: “The police and opposing individuals are responsible for my death, as they repeatedly demanded ₹75,000 and threatened to implicate me in a false case.”

Family members allege that when they went to the police station to file a report, the police hesitated to register it. They were allegedly pressured to remove the names of the accused officers from the complaint in order for the FIR to be filed.

Chandrasekhar Azad, National President of the Azad Samaj Party and MP from Nagina, expressed deep outrage over the incident and demanded immediate justice from the Uttar Pradesh government. He tagged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and presented four key demands:

1.Immediate registration of FIRs under strict sections against all accused police officers.

2.Immediate suspension and arrest of the guilty police personnel.

3.Compensation of at least ₹50 lakh to the bereaved family and a government job for one family member.

4.Formation of a high-level committee or appointment of an independent agency to ensure impartial investigation.

The incident has sparked outrage among Dalit-Bahujan communities and local residents. The focus now is on what steps the administration will take and how soon justice will reach the grieving family.

Serious questions are being raised regarding the role of the police in this case, highlighting the urgent need for police reforms in the state.
