The student union elections at the English and Foreign Languages University in Hyderabad witnessed a landmark victory for the democratic student alliance Awaaz. The coalition, comprising the Fraternity Movement, the National Students’ Union of India, and the Muslim Students Federation, secured a clean sweep of all Central Panel positions. In contrast, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Students’ Federation of India were defeated across every post.
The post of Students’ Union President was won by Harshad Shibin NK of the Fraternity Movement. Irfan Shajudheen of the Muslim Students Federation was elected General Secretary, while Sonu Raj of the National Students’ Union of India secured the position of Vice-President.
The Awaaz alliance also dominated the remaining Central Panel posts. Haleemathu SS Adiya of the Muslim Students Federation was elected Joint Secretary, Ayisha Neha of the Fraternity Movement won the post of Cultural Secretary, and Udita Purkait of the National Students’ Union of India was elected Sports Secretary.
In the final tally, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad finished second in all seats, while the Left-leaning Students’ Federation of India remained a distant third. The outcome is being widely viewed as a significant shift in campus politics.
Reacting to the results, the Fraternity Movement said in a statement that the mandate reflects the students’ clear commitment to democratic unity, social justice, and the protection of campus diversity. It added that the electorate had decisively rejected politics rooted in hatred and polarisation, instead affirming its aspiration for an inclusive, egalitarian, and vibrant campus culture.
The results of the English and Foreign Languages University student union elections are being seen as a strong indicator of the growing consolidation of democratic student forces across universities in the country.
