Police appear to be tightening the noose around former IPS officer Amitabh Das in connection with the high-profile NEET student death case. On Friday, authorities conducted a raid at his Patliputra apartment. While official confirmation of his arrest had not been issued by late evening, police sources indicated that he could be produced in court following questioning.
A case has been registered against Amitabh Das under Chitragupt Nagar Police Station FIR No. 44/26 for spreading rumors, posting misleading content on social media, and attempting to influence a sensitive case.
During the raid, police seized digital devices, documents, and other potential evidence. Data from computers, mobile phones, and other electronic devices is being examined. According to police officials, the seized digital evidence will be sent for forensic analysis, and further action will be determined after the report is received.
Speaking to the media during the raid, Amitabh Das questioned the action taken against him. He claimed that he had raised questions in public interest and was being deliberately targeted. He further alleged that his arrest was part of a conspiracy and stated that he would hand over the evidence in his possession to the central investigative agency.
The incident traces back to January 6, 2026, when a 16-year-old student from Jehanabad fell ill at Shambhu Girls Hostel in Patna. She died in hospital on January 11. Initially treated as a case of suicide, subsequent medical reports suggested the possibility of sexual assault. The family has alleged murder.
On January 16, following directives from the DGP, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the case, which was later handed over to a central agency. The CBI registered the case under Section 7S/26 and began its investigation.
In his statements, Amitabh Das named the Chief Minister’s son, Nishant Kumar, and demanded DNA testing. Senior leader Shivanand Tiwari dismissed these allegations as entirely unreliable, while Tej Pratap Yadav also termed Das’ claims baseless.
The NEET student death case has now become a subject of both legal proceedings and political debate. The full picture is expected to emerge only after the police and central agency submit their investigation reports.
