Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) National Vice President Mohammed Shafi has welcomed the acquittal of Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in the Delhi excise policy case by the Rouse Avenue Court, describing the verdict as a “judicial rebuke to a politically motivated prosecution.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, Shafi said that during the course of the trial, the case presented by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was found to be fundamentally weak. He alleged that claims projected as evidence of large-scale corruption failed to withstand judicial scrutiny. According to him, no substantial or credible evidence was produced in court to substantiate allegations of kickbacks or policy manipulation.
Shafi asserted that the court’s ruling indicates the case was advanced more on the strength of a political narrative than on the basis of factual investigation. “This verdict is not merely a relief for two leaders, but also raises serious questions about the increasing misuse of central investigative agencies,” he said.
The SDPI leader further alleged that institutions expected to function independently and impartially are increasingly being reduced to instruments of political pressure and intimidation against opponents. He added that the inability to secure convictions even after arrests, prolonged incarceration and public vilification of opposition leaders reflects a troubling trend.
Shafi maintained that such actions weaken the democratic framework and create an atmosphere aimed at suppressing dissent. He described the court’s decision as reinforcing public faith in the independence of the judiciary, while emphasizing that accountability must be ensured for those who undermine the credibility of democratic institutions.
He concluded by calling upon all democratic forces to unite in safeguarding constitutional values and strengthening the country’s democratic structure.
