Israeli Strike on Chabahar: India’s $370 Million Investment at Risk Amid Iran–Israel Tensions

Amid escalating military tensions between Iran and Israel in West Asia, an Israeli strike on Iran’s strategic Chabahar Port has dealt a significant blow to India’s strategic and economic plans.

According to reports, the Israeli attack caused heavy damage to the Shahid Beheshti Terminal — the very facility being operated by India and backed by investments worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The incident comes at a time when military activities between Iran and Israel have intensified, adding to instability across the region.

In 2024, India signed a 10-year agreement with Iran under which Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) was entrusted with the development and operation of the Shahid Beheshti Terminal.

The project includes a direct investment of $120 million along with a $250 million line of credit. The total investment is estimated between $350 million and $370 million. The port has long been regarded as a cornerstone of India’s western maritime and trade strategy.

Chabahar Port provides India direct access to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan. The port is located near Gwadar Port, which is backed by China.

Strategic analysts warn that if Chabahar’s operational capacity is significantly affected, India’s regional connectivity policy and its plan to bypass Pakistan could face serious setbacks.

Chabahar also serves as a key gateway to the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a trade route linking India to Russia and Central Asia via Iran. India has used this corridor to send food grains and humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. Following the attack, questions have arisen over the continuity and security of this alternative trade route.

India meets nearly 85 percent of its crude oil requirements through imports. Rising Iran-Israel tensions in West Asia and potential threats to maritime routes could put pressure on oil supplies and prices. Any escalation in the Strait of Hormuz would have a direct impact on the Indian economy.

While India has been strengthening defense and technology cooperation with Israel, it is simultaneously engaged in long-term strategic projects with Iran. The current developments have made New Delhi’s diplomatic balancing act even more complex.

An official response from the government is awaited. For now, it is clear that the attack on Chabahar is not merely about damage to a port, but reflects shifting geopolitical dynamics in West Asia.
