Delhi: Social Media Influencer Ayman Rizvi Questioned in Turkman Gate Mosque Case, Verdict on Bail of 12 Accused Reserved

The Delhi Police have questioned Muslim social media influencer Ayman Rizvi in connection with the violence and stone-pelting that occurred near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque in the Turkman Gate area on January 7 during an anti-encroachment drive. Police suspect that the incident could be part of a larger “conspiracy” to disturb public peace.

According to the police, Rizvi had posted a video on social media in the morning during the anti-encroachment operation, after which a large crowd gathered near the mosque, fueled by rumors that the mosque itself was being targeted. Authorities believe this contributed to the unrest.

However, Rizvi told the police that she was not present at the site and did not incite anyone to commit violence. She claimed that the video did not contain any inflammatory content and was viewed by only a few people. She also alleged that the police detained her children for several hours and confiscated her mobile phone.

Police say two other men who allegedly posted similar videos, along with about half a dozen stone-pelters, are still at large. So far, around 20 people have been arrested, mostly residents of Turkman Gate and nearby areas, while authorities are also investigating the involvement of outsiders.

In this case, the Tis Hazari Court in Turkman Gate has reserved its verdict on the bail pleas of the stone-pelting accused until February 16. Arguments against 12 defendants have already concluded.

On the night of January 7, several structures—including a marriage hall and a dispensary—were demolished during the municipal anti-encroachment drive near the mosque, while the mosque and dargah were left untouched. Rumors thereafter led local residents to gather, resulting in stone-pelting that injured some police personnel. Police had to resort to tear gas and mild force to control the situation.

A petition filed in the local court also alleged that the mosque authorities and the Waqf Board were not made parties to the matter, violating a High Court order on procedure. However, the court refused to issue any immediate directions and scheduled further hearings.

The police continue to conduct a thorough investigation into the role of social media in spreading rumors and inciting violence, while attempting to identify and arrest other suspects involved in the case.
