In a major reform of the teacher recruitment process, the Bihar government has announced that the state-level Bihar Teacher Eligibility Test (BTET) will no longer be conducted. From now on, only the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) will be considered valid for recruiting teachers at the primary (classes 1–5) and upper primary (classes 6–8) levels.
The Education Department explained that having two separate eligibility exams caused confusion and additional burden for candidates, who often had to appear for both state and central tests. This decision aims to simplify the process, and the rule will apply only to new recruitments.
CTET Becomes the Sole Eligibility Criterion,The BTET has been completely discontinued,Only candidates who have cleared CTET will be eligible for teaching positions from classes 1 to 8, Upcoming recruitments, including BPSC TRE‑4 and other state-level teacher appointments, will require a valid CTET certificate.
The department argues that this change will standardize teacher qualifications nationwide and make the recruitment process more transparent. It is also expected to enhance inter-state employment opportunities for candidates.
Education expert Guru Rahman told the media that the move will provide clarity for candidates’ preparation. “Now candidates will focus solely on CTET, eliminating any confusion about BTET. CTET, being a national-level examination, enables candidates to qualify for teaching positions across India,” he said.
He added “CTET’s syllabus and question level are comprehensive. For Bihar candidates, this will open doors to opportunities at the national level, ensure transparency in selection, and improve the overall quality of teachers.”
