Air Services to Resume in Muzaffarpur After 57 Years: AAI Issues ₹72 Crore Tender for Patahi Airport Development

After decades of waiting, air connectivity from Muzaffarpur is finally set to resume. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated a tender process worth over ₹72 crore for the development and upgradation of Patahi Airport.

The airport’s redevelopment will take place in two phases.

In the first phase, construction will include a terminal building, fire station, air traffic control tower, and an underground sump house. The estimated cost for this phase is ₹28.58 crore. The tender process is scheduled to open on February 27, and construction work will commence in April after the selection of the executing agency.

The second phase will focus on runway extension and other essential infrastructure, including taxiways, apron, perimeter road, vehicle lanes, and an emergency road. The estimated cost for this phase is ₹43.13 crore.

Once completed, the airport will accommodate 19-seater small aircraft, with parking space for two planes. This development is expected to provide faster and better connectivity for passengers in North Bihar, reducing dependence on airports like Patna and Darbhanga.

Patahi Airport, closed since the 1970s, will resume flight operations after 57 years. The project is being executed under the Central Government’s UDAN regional connectivity scheme and the Bihar Government’s initiative.

Currently, the airport spans approximately 99.44 acres. Upon completion, it will enhance connectivity not only within Mithilanchal but also for districts in North Bihar and neighboring Nepal.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and central leadership have described the project as crucial for the state’s economic and social development.
