30% Muslim detainees in India: Double the population percentage.

Patna (CNA Media/Insaaf Times) jails have 4 types of prisoners – convicts (persons found guilty of a crime and sentenced by a court), undertrials (currently on trial in a court of law), detenues (persons held lawfully in custody), and those who don’t belong to any of these three categories and make up a small share of the total number of prisoners. As of 2021, over 30% of all detenues in Indian prisons are Muslims despite the commmunity’s population being only 14% (as of 2011).For instance, in Assam, 61% of the convicts and 49% of the undertrials were Muslims, with the population being only 34%.Other states with relatively high number of detainees – disproportionate to the population share, in Gujarat, UP, Haryana, and J&K UT.
