The National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations organized and successfully conducted a webinar on the topic Country-Wide Lockdown: The Assault on Labourers. The webinar was held on April 20, 2021, at 3 pm, on the online platform Zoom.At a time when the coronavirus is seeing a surge once again, it was appropriate to discuss the way the pandemic was dealt with last year, and the disastrous effects it had on the working class of the country. To that end, the webinar was held. The President of the Delhi state committee of NCHRO, adv. Amit Srivastav moderated the discussion. The webinar began with a brief outline of the issue and the state of the working class under the current government. Adv. Amit Srivastav then invited the first speaker, Mr. Shakti from the New Trade Union Initiative, to speak on the topic.Shakti spoke about the way in which the current government has been passing laws related to labourers when a mere minority of the parliamentarians are present in the parliament. He laid out the danger in proceeding in this way and talked about the tyrannical nature of the current government, who meddles with the labour codes, passes laws related to labourers, all while the parliament has a small minority present. After Shakti, Adv. Amit Srivastav invited Sandeep from Workers Unity. Sandeep spoke at length about the state of the media, the farmers’ ongoing protest, and the state of the working class in the country. Sandeep also spoke at length about the labour rights activist, Nodeep Kaur, who had been arrested from Kundli after she participated in the struggle of the workers there to get their rightful due wages. He said that we have to be alert to the way in which the lockdown is again seeming imminent, as it can lead to the similar disastrous effects on the workers. He also talked about trade unionist leaders not been abreast with the political state of the country, and said that this is something that needs to be worked upon.Following Shakti, Professor Saroj Giri spoke about the prospect of a working-class movement. He reflected on why there hasn’t been a large-scale movement of labourers as there has been of the farmers. He also urged the progressive sections to introspect and think about why we haven’t been able to tap into the tension between the current state of affairs and the condition of the working-class. He urged everyone to understand the importance of working on the ground. At the end, a short question and answer session was held where the audience asked their questions and the speakers responded. Afterwards, Adv. Amit Srivastav thanked everyone for joining the webinar, and expressed his desire to keep the discussion going.Sincerely,Ishu Jaiswal,Coordinator,NCHRO
